If your LCD monitor has stopped working and you want to save a couple of hundred bucks, you should consider repairing the monitor yourself. Chances are, the only thing wrong with it is a couple of bad capacitors. These little components look like miniature soft drink cans. When they go bad, the tops will bulge out so you can easily tell which ones are bad. They are very, very easy to remove. All you need is a Radio Shack solder gun.

The only thing stopping you from looking at them, is taking the LCD monitor apart! When the LCD monitors are assembled at the factory, they are not designed to be easily disassembled. It takes a little courage to separate the front from the back. About the only tool you will need for the job is a putty knife. A small one, maybe 1/2 inch wide. Tools made of plastic, like a guitar pick also work well. Plastic tools are less likely to scratch the plastic.

The first step is to look on the web and see if anybody has already posted a guide for taking your model of LCD apart. Often, somebody has already done the job and they have posted the instructions for you. This makes the job considerably easier. If you can't find any instructions, your on your own!
Turn the monitor onto its face and remove the base. There are normally four screws that secure the base to the back of the LCD monitor. After you have removed the base, examine the back of the LCD monitor for any other screws. Often there will be from two to four more screws that hold the front bezel to the back. Remove these as well. After you have removed ALL the screws, pick the monitor up, turn it upside down with the screen facing away from you. It's best to start on the bottom of the LCD monitor, that way if you make any "beginner errors" they wont be so visable.
Insert the putty knife between the two halves and begin to pry. Slide it under the front bezel about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Don't be too worried about breaking the plastic, it's stronger than you think, and you will need to use some force to get the job done. Remember, the monitor is heading for the trash can, or Goodwill anyway if you don't fix it, so you really don't have much to loose.
Work your way across the bottom, after the bottom halves are separated, start working on the sides. After the sides are finished, move onto the top of the LCD monitor. Be careful when you separate the halves as there is often a ribbon cable that connects the LCD monitor's controls and you don't want to damage that ribbon cable.
Once you have both halves apart, the rest of the job is a snap. Remove the metal circuit board cover. This usually requires the removal of several more screws. You may have to remove the hex screws that hold the DVI and VGA plugs as well, but this varies from monitor to monitor.
